The Historical Society of Palm Beach County has an extensive archives and artifact collection available for study, including over two million photographs, hundreds of postcards, architectural drawings, manuscripts, diaries, and maps. Our collection is a valuable source of primary and secondary sources on Palm Beach County history. Images can also be reproduced for private, business, or educational use.
Research at the HSPBC is coordinated through Rose Guerrero, Research Director. Requests and are by appointment only. The Research Department fields requests via phone, fax, letter, and email. The staff will make every effort to respond to your request within 72 hours, but please be patient.

What type of response should I expect to my request?
Staff will evaluate your request with a preliminary search of the Archives and advise you what, if anything, has been found on your subject of interest. If there is an abundance of material on hand, you may be asked to make a research appointment to review what is available in the Reading Room.
When are appointments available?
Research appointments are usually made for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. We cannot accommodate walk-in requests. If more than one person will be in the research party, please advise us in advance so proper space may be allocated in the Reading Room. You may bring laptop computers, but be prepared to use battery back-up in the event outlets are unavailable. The Reading Room is closed to research from July 1 through Labor Day each year during installation of the annual special exhibit.
Are there any fees for research or appointments?
Research onsite is free to members of the Historical Society. The fee is $20 per hour for non-members. Memberships may be purchased at your appointment. If you are unable to visit in person or if time is of the essence, staff and/or volunteers can conduct research, write a report, or copy materials, for a fee of $100 to $150 per hour.
Photocopies can be made of items that are in good condition. Photocopies up to 8-1/2” x 14” cost .25 per sheet for black and white and .50 per sheet for color. Copies at 11” x 17” cost .50 per sheet for black and white and $1 per sheet for color. Mailing fees are added when appropriate. Payment must be arranged in advance.
Can photographic reproductions be made from documents and photographs?
The type of use must be specified on the Society’s “Request for Reproductions” form. Conditions governing use are specified in that contractual agreement, which must be signed by the user and a representative of the Historical Society.
Fees & Charges:
The Historical Society offers a variety of options for the reproduction of photographs, postcards, architectural drawings, film, and other images from its collections.
A copy of the final product containing the reproduction(s) is to be sent to the Historical Society. In addition, any use of an image from the Society’s collection must contain the following credit line at image:
“Courtesy Historical Society of Palm Beach County.”
Charges for reproductions include two elements:
- A one-time use fee for the reproduction.
- A charge for producing the reproduction.
The use fee and charge for reproduction are added together for the total charges due. All charges must be paid in full at the time an order is placed.
Orders typically require 7 to 10 days to complete.
The research fee is $20 per hour for non-members.
Members receive a 10% discount on use fees.
For Home Display/Study: Includes personal, in-home use: $20 per image.
For Editorial Use: Includes books, periodicals, educational films, video productions, and other published works, and public use in school classrooms or courtrooms: Non-profit organizations $25; Commercial $75 per image
Public Display & Exhibit: Includes use in offices, restaurants, and other public places: (per image) Non-profit organizations $60; Commercial use $120
Advertising & Other Non-Editorial Use: Includes commercial film and video production, posters, brochures, postcards, unbound materials, etc: (per image) Non-profit organization $50; Commercial use $100
Film or Video Use: $100 per minute
Architectural Drawings: $100 per drawing
Larger reproductions can be scanned and printed to paper. Prices available on request.
*Please note: Very old photos do not always format into today’s standard sizes. If exact dimensions are required, please advise us before you place your order. Also, not all of our early photos and negatives are in pristine condition. Digital repair is available for an additional charge.
Film & Video: Varies by type. Prices quoted on request.
Maps & Architectural Drawings: Drawings need special handling. Costs vary by size, condition of original, and type of reproduction. Prices quoted on request.
